People Over Profits
We just returned $900,000+ to our electric members!
We often hear concerns about utilities being profit-driven. Our neighbors served by investor-owned utilities continue to have rate increases. They see new charges to help pay for large projects that do not benefit them. Your utility is different. Your utility is a cooperative.
Our focus is not on generating profits. We don't have shareholders looking to make as much money as possible or recover costs for large projects. We have members who trust us to provide safe and reliable energy now and in the future. As a not-for-profit organization, we use revenue to cover expenses and reinvest in our system. The goal is not to make 'extra profits'. When we do, our Board of Directors determines if we can return it to our members as capital credit retirements.
We could not do this for many years because The Energy Cooperative's equity position was not high enough to return money to members. Fortunately, a few years ago, we reached a positive equity level high enough to give money back.
How Does It Work?
As a member of The Energy Cooperative, you earn capital credits based on the amount of energy you use (or the amount of money you invest in the cooperative). We track this annually, even when we could not pay capital credits. When the cooperative performs well financially and has more revenue than necessary for costs and system reinvestment, the Board of Directors determines how much money to return to members. This year, they decided to distribute an impressive amount.

The Energy Cooperative pays capital credits in accordance with its bylaws. While our electric members accumulate capital credits each year, we pay them back on a 20-year cycle. We are also addressing a backlog from years when we could not return profits to members, which is why the Board of Directors also distributed funds from 1984.
As you know, The Energy Cooperative family includes more than an electric cooperative. We are working hard to improve the financial position of our natural gas and propane cooperatives so they can start allocating capital credits to members. Even if you did not receive a payment of capital credits, we hope you can appreciate being part of something that puts people over profits.
