Retail Choice & Aggregation
Retail Choice
What is retail choice? Retail choice refers to the ability for retail customers to shop for electric generation or natural gas supply service, and to choose the supplier that will provide their electricity or natural gas.
In Ohio, customers of investor-owned utilities can select their electric generation suppliers, known as Competitive Retail Electric Service (CRES) companies. This program is called Energy Choice Ohio or "Apples to Apples". Cooperative members in Ohio are not eligible to be part of the Apples to Apples program.
Why are electric cooperative members not allowed to join this program?
State law keeps Ohio electric cooperatives out of the retail choice program because they are member-owned and locally governed. Retail choice was designed for a different market structure, and the cooperative structure falls outside the scope of that market. The legislation for retail choice was primarily aimed at investor-owned utilities, not member-owned cooperatives.
Electric Aggregation
What is aggregation? An aggregator is a person, local government or organization that brings a group of consumers together to buy electricity or natural gas. An aggregator may be able to get lower prices or other benefits for the group members.
Do cooperative members need to select an aggregator?
The short answer is no. The Energy Cooperative already works on your behalf to secure the lowest possible price for your power. We join forces with 24 electric cooperatives to purchase power for our members. Together, Ohio Electric Cooperatives own Buckeye Power, a generation and transmission cooperative that provides affordable power to its membership.
