Winter Safety Tips

Protect your Gas Meter
Clear snow and ice carefully around your natural gas meter or propane tank. Don’t pile snow on or near them, and use caution with shovels or snow removal equipment.

Heating your Home
Never use stoves, ovens or grills to heat your home or business. Check and update insulation before cold weather arrives.

Keep Vents Clear
Keep outdoor vents and air intakes clear of snow and ice. Proper ventilation is essential for furnaces, fireplaces, water heaters, and dryers.

Install a Carbon Monoxide Detector
Carbon monoxide (CO) is odorless, invisible and can seriously harm you if it builds up. Install CO detectors near sleeping areas, near garage and on every level of your home.

Space Heaters
Space heaters should be kept at least three feet from anything flammable, such as rugs, blankets and paper. Never leave a space heater unattended.

Generators
Never connect a generator directly to your home’s electrical panel or a wall outlet. This dangerous practice backfeeds the generator and can cause electrocution.

Downed Power Lines
Always assume downed power lines are energized and dangerous. Stay at least 10 feet away. Call 911 immediately, then call us to report downed power lines outside your home. Never touch a person or object that is in direct or indirect contact with a downed power line.

Suspect a Gas Leak?
If you suspect a gas leak, call 911. Then, call us at 740-344-2102. Leave the door open. Do not use phones, switches or anything that could create a spark.

Shut Off Valve
Before there’s an emergency and you need to shut off your gas immediately, make sure know where the main shut off valve is located and how to use it.
