High Gas Bill?

The high bill was caused by the combination of two important factors.

First, your bill likely reflects 17 days of sub-zero temperatures. During this time, your furnace uses more energy to keep your home comfortable. This happens even if you keep your thermostat at the same setting (or even lower).

Second, variable gas costs are nearly double what they were a year ago.

Look at this example from February 2025 and 2026. The use is the same as last year. However, the gas cost per ccf is noticeably higher.

  • Gas Cost February 2026: 300 CCF x 01.05 =$315.00
  • Gas Cost February 2025: 300 CCF x 0.630 = $189.00

Your bill includes both fixed and variable charges. The gas cost is a variable cost that updates monthly. The Distribution Charge, Fixed Month Facility Fee, and Infrastructure Replacement Rider are constant.

This is the first time since June 2022 that our variable gas cost went above $1.00/ccf. This spike can be attributed to the extreme code we experienced during winter storm Fern. Click here to read more about natural gas prices spiking during winter storm Fern. The extreme cold across the United States created an unusually high demand for natural gas. This caused prices to rise significantly. Our members also exceeded their normal natural gas consumption during this period. We purchased additional gas at very high prices to ensure our members had the natural gas needed to stay warm. This cost is reflected in your current bill.
