Safety is Our First Priority

The Energy Cooperative is committed to providing safe and reliable energy to our members. Our top priority is the safety of our employees, members, and the broader community. We believe that if we take the lead in safety, others will follow.

The Licking County Pipeline will be designed, constructed, tested and operated in accordance with applicable federal and state regulations. Our goal is to build and operate this pipeline in a way that keeps our communities safe.

We use a combination of design, construction and operational practices to help keep our pipelines safe:

Design Standards – The pipeline will be designed to meet or exceed Ohio Power Siting Board pipeline safety standards.
Quality Construction – Qualified professionals will install, weld and test the pipeline before it is placed in service.
In-Line Inspection – The line will be designed to accommodate in-line inspection tools (“smart pigs”) to evaluate pipeline condition over time.
24/7 Monitoring – Our gas control center will monitor pressure and flow around the clock and can respond if operating conditions change.

Remember the three main ways to recognize a natural gas leak:

Smell – A leak may have an odor similar to rotten eggs. Under some conditions, gas may not have an added odor. [Question: Will gas be odorized?]
See – You might see blowing dirt, bubbling water, or an area of dead vegetation that is different from the surrounding area.
Hear – You might hear a hissing or roaring sound near a pipeline, meter or underground facility.

If you recognize even one of these signs, act quickly.

If you suspect a gas leak or pipeline emergency:

Leave the area immediately – Move away on foot to a safe distance.
Do not try to stop or repair the leak yourself.
Do not use anything that might create a spark, including phones, light switches, vehicles, garage door openers or power tools.
From a safe location, call 911.
Then call The Energy Cooperative at 740-344-2102.
Do not re-enter the area until emergency responders or The Energy Cooperative tell you it is safe.

Before you dig, drill or move earth in any way near the pipeline right-of-way:

Always contact OHIO811 at least two business days before you dig.
Utilities will mark buried facilities in the area.
This free service protects you from injury, protects your property, and helps prevent service outages.

Even if you use the pipeline markers or our project map to understand approximate locations, you must still contact OHIO811. Project maps and pipeline markers are provided for general information purposes only and do not represent exact locations.
